Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain opened the General Synod yesterday with these words:
"When so much is in flux… there is a renewed hunger for that which endures and gives meaning. The Christian Church can speak uniquely to that need, for at the heart of our faith stands the conviction that all people, irrespective of race, background or circumstances, can find lasting significance and purpose in the Gospel of Jesus Christ."
A hundred years ago, such a statment from the British Crown, who, as Head of the Church of England, holds the title "Defender of the Faith", would not have elicited much attention. These days for a head of state to say something so unabashedly pro-Christian raises eyebrows.
Granted, she was speaking to a formal meeting of the Church of England. For the whole story, see (here).

If only the Archbishop of Canterbury were so forthright in his presentaation of the gospel!
